Encaustic on Wood Panel

39" x 28.5" x 1.75" (HWD)

  • This series of encaustic paintings explores single separated human emotions.  This particular work is representing the separated single emotion of being astonished.  When interacting with this work it may bring up emotions related to, or completely separate from, the depicted core emotion which can give the viewer a greater understanding of their reaction to their personal experiences.

The Encaustic technique dates back to the Romans around 100 AD.  It involves heating wax with tree sap and pigments and burning the layers onto the panel.  It produces very interesting textures and depth that cannot be obtained from oil or acrylic.

These painting are created on wood panels that I make using found materials, reclaimed wood, and doors.  The process of pigmenting, layering, scraping, gouging, dripping and torching the wax creates the complex and essential interacting colors and textures that help represent the complex and isolated emotions.
